Kastellet, The Little Mermaid, Church of Our Saviour, and Freetown Christiania

The next morning, we had an extensive breakfast at the hotel restaurant. The buffet truly left nothing to be desired. Cold cuts, ham, cheese, and vegetables were plentiful, and there were also various cereals and different types of bread.

After this perfect start to the day, we took the bus to the Kastellet fortress. This historic site is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Northern Europe and is shaped like a pentagon.

Surrounded by moats and located in a peaceful-looking landscape, it’s easy to forget that you’re in the middle of a big city.

We walked for a long time through this beautiful complex, where we saw cannons, a windmill, and barracks buildings.

From the Kastellet, it wasn’t far to the city’s landmark—the Little Mermaid, who sits atop a rock in the harbor.

From there, we boarded the harbor bus, which is part of the city’s public transportation system and stops at various points along the river and is included with the day pass.

We took it to the Church of Our Saviour, whose twisted spire is unique. A long climb up many stairs leads to an open-air viewing platform from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view.

From there, a spiral staircase that becomes narrower the higher you go wraps around the tower's spire.

Looking down is both frightening and fascinating.

The next stop on our sightseeing tour was Freetown Christiania, which was founded by dropouts in the 1970s.

This district is truly one of a kind. Colorful houses often covered in graffiti define the landscape. Several alternative cafés and restaurants complete the picture. We strolled through the fascinating streets for hours.

On the way, we stopped at the restaurant Morgenstedet, which we found thanks to good Google reviews.

The food was fresh, creative, and a real treat!

After wandering a bit more through the alleys, we enjoyed hot cappuccinos and sweet pastries in a bakery.

It was slowly getting dark. Once again, we were fascinated by the lights of the nighttime city.

We had dinner at a fast-food burger chain—not because we are fans of the chain, but because there was a “Buy 2 – Pay for 1” burger deal that day, which we welcomed given the fairly high prices.

Afterward, we returned tired and happy to our hotel and ended the evening with another coffee, winding down comfortably.
