Mother’s Day in the Museum Village
Since I was so impressed by the beautiful museum village in Niedersulz, I wished for another visit for Mother’s Day.
Unlike our last visit, the sun was shining brightly in the sky this time.
We headed to the inn first, where a traditional Frühschoppen was taking place for Mother’s Day. A brass band called “Fiata Musi” played very good music, and the atmosphere was relaxed. It was the perfect way to start the day.
After that, we visited the general store, which we hadn’t seen during our first visit. The village is simply too big to see and experience everything in one go. Instantly, we felt transported back in time.
Attached to the store is a tavern, though it now serves only exhibition purposes. Simple wooden benches and a bar counter hint at how cozy it must have been here in the past.
We continued walking through the village’s romantic alleyways. Now in May, the gardens were in full bloom, and the air was filled with the scent of flowers and herbs.
We also revisited some of the living quarters. There were bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens. Often, however, everything was contained within a single room.
One building housed an exhibition of antique furniture pieces adorned with beautiful painted decorations. Sadly, you simply don’t see anything like that today.
Crossing a small wooden bridge, we came to another homestead that wasn’t open to the public inside.
But the well in the garden reminded me strongly of the one my grandmother had when I was a child.
In other houses, we were again able to view fully furnished rooms. I simply enjoy looking at things like that the most.
While the village reflects life and interior decor around 1900, many of the pieces still remind me of my own childhood in the 1970s – especially the village where my grandmother used to live.
In the seamstress’s workshop, you could admire wedding clothing from long ago – white was not always the color of choice. In fact, we even saw a black wedding dress.
After all the sightseeing, our hunger slowly returned.
We took a break in the courtyard where we had eaten so well during our first visit.
This time we ordered bread with lard, bread with bacon, and Bauernkrapfen (traditional Austrian pastries).
The food was delicious once again, the atmosphere cheerful. We sat on the rustic wooden benches for a long time, enjoying the tasty dishes, the good wine, and the glorious weather on this beautiful spring Sunday.
Afterward, we strolled a bit more through the alleys, looked at a few more houses, and eventually arrived back at the school – which we had already visited during our first time here. But this time, my son was with us, and I wanted to show it to him too.
In the schoolhouse, an old text written in Kurrent script was on display, and we all tried to read it – it was so much fun.
In the herb garden behind the school, a wonderful variety of herbs was in bloom, and the fragrance was enchanting.
We then visited the farmstead with the animals once again. That was a real highlight, especially for my son. We saw goats, chicken, rabbits, and many other animals. Some geese and a rooster were even roaming freely around the grounds.
We also returned to the house where you can try out various activities. I grated some nuts and tested the bed.
The straw mattress was quite firm.
My son and I had fun sorting peas, beans, and lentils from one another.
Finally, we also visited the Kellergasse again, where we ended the day with a glass of wine and some snacks in a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.
I will never forget this Mother’s Day, and I’m sure I’ll return to Niedersulz someday.
