Day 2 – Plaka and the Coast

The next morning, we got up quite early. We wanted to see as much of the city as possible before it got too hot again.

Our destination today was Plaka, the heart of Athens' old town.

In a small café, we treated ourselves to a wonderful breakfast, then took the subway directly to the center again.

Plaka is absolutely charming with its narrow alleys, neoclassical houses, and cozy squares, where numerous cafés and restaurants invite you to linger.

We spent hours wandering through the winding alleys. Time and again, remnants of ancient buildings appeared before us. Occasionally, we could also catch a glimpse of the Acropolis, majestically perched on a hill above the city. You can also find small boutiques and souvenir shops here.

In a small, charming taverna, we had some pitas with meat for lunch—my favorite Greek street food.

In the afternoon, we relaxed again by the pool, refreshed ourselves in the water from the day's heat, and swam a few laps.

In the late afternoon, we set off for Glyfada, a suburb of Athens located directly on the coast. You can comfortably get there directly from the center by tram. The ride takes about an hour.

We strolled a bit along the beach

Then we visited a restaurant I had discovered on Google Maps.

It was a simple, very cozy, and very authentic fish restaurant. You paid a fixed amount per person, and then you could eat whatever and as much as you wanted.

We ordered fish, mussels, squid, shrimp—all our favorite dishes. The feast was accompanied by a huge Greek farmer's salad. There was cool wine, and to finish, ouzo and raki. Rarely in my life have I eaten so well as there. Should I ever return to Athens, this restaurant is definitely a must.

It was already dark when we left the restaurant. Well-fed, we made our way back to the hotel, where I ended the evening comfortably in the whirlpool.
