Day 4: Budapest
The next day, it was time to say goodbye to Hajdúszoboszló. We had one last breakfast in our lovely apartment, then packed our things and set off for Budapest.
We reached the city after about two hours of driving, but it took us quite a while to get to our accommodation within the city due to heavy traffic. It was still too early to check into our apartment, but we were already allowed to park the car in the garage.
By now, it was early afternoon, and we were very hungry. So we went to a nearby pizzeria and ordered salami and margherita pizzas.
Then we took a leisurely walk through the city.
This time, we were staying in the 8th district, Józsefváros – a very lively neighborhood with lots of bars and restaurants, but still with a tranquil feel.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining brightly, and the weather was pleasantly warm.
It was only about a 20-minute walk to our favorite café, where we had arranged to meet a dear friend who lives in Budapest.
Afterward, we strolled along Váci Utca to Fővám tér, where the cafés are always packed with tourists.
This is also where the very impressive Great Market Hall is located.
We continued walking along the ring road to Kálvin tér, with its lovely white Reformed Church from the 19th century and the typical book stalls.
From there, it was only a few steps to our apartment, which we could now finally check into.
The apartment was beautiful and very modern. We had a large double bed where we would sleep very well. The well-equipped kitchen even had a coffee machine.
There was also a dining area, where a lovingly arranged bowl of sweets awaited us.
A sofa invited us to relax. There was even a small balcony.
We freshened up briefly, then it was time for dinner. We strolled through the nighttime Budapest, passing the museum and the library. Eventually, we reached the synagogue and thus the Jewish Quarter.
Our destination was “Caravan Street Food,” where we’ve been eating for years whenever we’re in Budapest.
In summer, however, it’s already very crowded nowadays, and often you don’t get a seat or have to wait forever for food. That just isn’t fun anymore.
But now, in April, on the still cool evenings, it wasn’t very busy. We ordered delicious burgers – I tried a very tasty vegan version.
There were fries, cold beer, and for me, water – my favorite drink after coffee.
For dessert, we treated ourselves to churros with chocolate.
We ended the evening in a relaxed mood, enjoying the romantic atmosphere among the city’s famous ruin bars.
The next day, we made ourselves a cup of coffee for breakfast in the apartment, then it was time to head home.
On the way, we stopped at a shopping center where we picked up a few things at Tesco and Rossmann. We don’t have either store at home, so I always visit them when I’m in Hungary.
On the way back, we stopped in Mosonmagyaróvár, where we ordered catfish paprikás for me and schnitzel with fries for my partner at a guesthouse we knew from before.
For dessert, we shared a portion of chestnut purée. Once again, the food was wonderful.
An hour later, we were back home. This wonderful short trip will stay with us for a long time.
