A Ride on Tram Line 2 to Opicina
The Tram de Opicina first ran from Trieste to Opicina, a small, idyllic village in the Trieste Karst in the early 20th century.
After several minor accidents, a head-on collision between two tram cars occurred in 2016, in which eight people were injured, some of them seriously. As a result, the operation of the legendary tram was suspended.
We always regretted this deeply, as we are big train and tram enthusiasts and had never had the chance to ride this famous line.
So when I happened to read in a blog post just before Easter 2025 that the tram was running again, it was immediately clear: we’re going to Trieste.
We quickly found accommodation right in the city center, not far from the terminus of the famous tram.
In the meantime, the line had been modernized and made safer. The carriages are the same as always – more than 100 years old. Tram and funicular technologies were combined, which was essential for managing the incline of up to 26%.
So we boarded the tram, which no longer departs from Piazza Oberdan as it used to, but now leaves from Piazza Dalmazia, just a few meters away.
Along the way, there were stunning views over Trieste and out to the sea again and again.
We didn’t ride the full 5-kilometer route but got off along the way to stop at one of the famous Osmize, which are plentiful throughout the Trieste Karst.
By the time we got off, we had long left the city behind. The surroundings here were peaceful and rural. The Osmiza was just a one-minute walk from the tram stop.
From the terrace, we had a wonderful panoramic view over the entire Bay of Trieste.
We ordered the typical local specialties served here: prosciutto, mortadella, various types of horseradish, bacon, salami, along with tomatoes and peppers.
This delicious meal was accompanied by the flavourful white wine that grows in the Karst.
We enjoyed the good food and the breathtaking view.
Then we made our way back to the tram stop, where we took the next tram up to the Obelisk of Opicina.
This obelisk dates back to the year 1839.
From here, you have another spectacular view over the city, the port, and the entire bay stretching far out to the open sea.
Now the ride entered its final stage to the terminus in Opicina. We’d visited this charming village several times before, so this time we limited ourselves to a stop at a café.
Then we returned to the apartment. This tram ride will remain unforgettable.
