Heiligenkreuz
It wasn’t far from Mayerling to Heiligenkreuz. We enjoyed the wonderful landscape of the Föhrenberge Nature Park with its green, gentle hills.
On one of these hills, we discovered a romantic little chapel.
The weather was rather gloomy, but at least it wasn’t raining. Spring had taken far too long to arrive this year.
Soon we could see the monastery between the trees.
Heiligenkreuz was founded as early as the 12th century and is thus one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in the world, still in active use today.
The medieval architecture of the monastery is especially impressive and perfectly preserved.
The cloister was built in the 13th century in Gothic style. In the inner courtyard of the monastery, there is a large fountain surrounded by many brightly blooming flowers.
We strolled leisurely through the complex and let the unique architecture of the buildings sink in.
In the monastery’s restaurant, we finally took a well-deserved break and ordered local specialties.
Eventually, it was time to head back home. A wonderful excursion had come to an end.
