Laxenburg
One Sunday in June, we decided to finally go to Laxenburg again after a long time.
Laxenburg is a pretty, small village that is worth a visit by itself. But the main attraction is the castle park. The castle once served the Habsburgs as a summer residence, and especially Empress Elisabeth liked to spend time here, as she could take long rides through the extensive park.
The baroque castle lies just behind the park entrance but unfortunately cannot be visited.
We strolled along pretty hiking paths through the park toward the lake. There we rented an electric boat to explore the large pond.
At first, we cruised close to the shore.
Since my son absolutely wanted to take the steering wheel, my partner and I could relax and enjoy the ride.
We followed one side arm of the lake to its end. Along the way, we even encountered a family of swans.
Then we passed behind the Franzensburg. This castle, artificially built in medieval style in the 19th century, forms the heart of the park.
Situated on an island, it can only be reached by ferry. This castle can be visited. There are knight’s halls and armories as well as numerous furnishings to see.
Directly behind the castle by the lake is a café/restaurant where we have already spent many lovely hours.
The boat trip continued to the grotto, a kind of cave in the rock.
Through a bridge, we reached another side arm.
In the distance, we could also see the small sightseeing train several times, which takes tourists through the park.
After the boat ride, we strolled a little more through the park.
Since we were getting hungry, we decided to drive to our favorite restaurant in Laxenburg. It is located on the edge of town and has a large beer garden, which even includes a mini-golf course.
The food tasted very good – a perfect end to a beautiful day.
