Jeep Safari in the Taurus Mountains and Sapadere Canyon

We had booked today’s excursion through our tour guide again. This time, it was to be a jeep trip into the Taurus Mountains behind Alanya.

Punctually, our driver picked us up in a jeep that was no longer really new.

At a breakneck pace, he drove us to the meeting point where we were to meet our guide for the day as well as the other participants of the excursion.

There were about 15 jeeps in total, each carrying about 8 people.

We received a brief introduction to the day’s programme, and then we were off.

Cüceler Cave – A Spectacle of Colours Underground

First, we drove to Cüceler Cave, which impressed us with its rock formations and ancient stalactites and stalagmites in various rainbow colours.

The path to and from the cave was already beautiful, offering wonderful views of the fascinating Taurus Mountains again and again.

Near the cave, there was a restaurant where we refreshed ourselves with cool drinks.

Village Visit – Insight into Traditional Life

Next, we continued to a small traditional village.

There we visited a weaving workshop, where weaving was still done using old techniques, and a water mill.

This gave us a good insight into traditional village life and local crafts.

At the entrance to the village, we saw a beautiful mosque, a quiet, peaceful place that fit perfectly into the idyllic landscape.

On the way, we stopped at a "bazaar." They served us hot çay (tea) and there was the opportunity to buy souvenirs.

This bazaar was not really worth seeing. It was a typical place where tourists are guided during their tours and where products are sold at hugely overpriced prices that had previously been imported in large quantities from China. It had nothing to do with authentic Turkish products.

Sapadere Canyon – Natural Wonder in the Taurus Mountains

Afterwards, we drove on to the famous Sapadere Canyon, which winds narrowly through the rocks.

A narrow wooden walkway leads past steep rock walls and roaring waterfalls.

There are repeatedly bathing spots, although they are often very difficult to access.

As a water lover, I couldn’t miss this.

When I dipped into the only 10 degrees Celsius cold water, it felt like 1000 needles pricking me.

I had never been in water so cold before and after a few minutes I got out again. But I had never felt so refreshed and will never forget this adventure.

At the restaurant directly at the canyon, we enjoyed a delicious lunch consisting of crispy grilled fish, bulgur, and a fresh salad. It was wonderful.

Afterwards, it was time to return to the hotel.

We will always remember this excursion very fondly.
