Capri
The ferry crossing was pleasant. On board there was a bistro serving cornetti, sandwiches and coffee for breakfast. We spent the entire journey on deck, watching Naples disappear in the distance and Capri slowly come into view.
It was a beautiful sunny summer morning, the temperature still pleasant – at least for now.
After arriving at the Marina Grande, we bought tickets for the island bus. After a long wait – Capri is hopelessly overcrowded in summer – we drove to Anacapri and checked into our hotel.
We then strolled through the charming village with its whitewashed houses. Despite the crowds of tourists, Anacapri exudes a relaxed calm – a nice contrast to the more glamorous Capri town.
We reached the chairlift station that slowly pulls its passengers up Monte Solaro. During the ride, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the coastline.
Once at the top, we were overwhelmed: the view across the entire island and over the Gulf of Naples was the most beautiful I had ever seen.
At the La Canzone del Cielo restaurant on Capri’s highest point, we enjoyed a Limoncello Spritz made from the huge, sweet lemons of Sorrento. Up there on the mountain, cocktail in hand, I was overcome by an incredible sense of peace and contentment. All the stress at work, all unnecessary worries – blown away by the Italian summer air.
After a while we walked from one viewpoint to the next and then took the lift back down to Anacapri.
By now it was early afternoon, and the sun was blazing mercilessly. Time to cool off!
Therefore we took a bus to the freee bathing area at the lighthouse.
Swimming in the cool sea was a blessing. The beach was surrounded by rocks, between which you could swim and where you could also be by yourself. This setting was breathtakingly beautiful. I'm a real water enthusiast and didn’t want to leave the cool water at all.
However, we eventually had to leave at some point.
We took the next bus back to town where we picked up a few Italian delicacies from the supermarket.
After a quick shower at the hotel and enjoying a delicious meal on our terrace, we set off to watch the red sun sink into the sea.
We took the next bus to Capri town and strolled through the elegant streets, past the shop windows of the most famous luxury brands. What a contrast to peaceful Anacapri with its small, refined boutiques.
As dusk began to fall, we looked for a nice spot to finally witness in person the most sung-about sunset. It truly was an extraordinary experience!
We ended the evening on the Piazzetta with another Limoncello Spritz. The atmosphere was unique. The murmur of the many people strolling through the town mixed with the typical sounds of an Italian summer night. These are moments that etch themselves into your memory forever.
A breathtaking boat trip with a swimming stop
The next morning, we woke up feeling very relaxed and happy. Breakfast in the large garden of our hotel was plentiful, varied, and absolutely delicious. It was enriched by a pleasant conversation with the hotel owners. It’s these encounters with people you meet while traveling, the exchange with them, that make traveling so valuable and enrich your own life immensely.
After we had checked out and taken the bus back to Marina Grande, it was time for my personal highlight of the trip: my birthday present. It was a boat tour around the island with several swimming stops along the way. For me, there is nothing better than spending time on and in the water.
The boat left the harbor punctually. Besides us, there were about 25 other guests on board. Our friendly captain provided us with numerous facts about Capri along the way and even shared a few anecdotes. We saw emerald shimmering grottos, the “Lovers’ Rock”, passed by the famous “Blue Grotto” and swam several times in the open sea with a view of this unique island in the middle of the azure-blue ocean.
After a little more than two hours and one round around the island, the trip sadly came to an end.
At the harbor, we treated ourselves to a cappuccino before making our way, happy but very tired, to the ferry that would take us on to Sorrento.
